INDIRE
PERINE QUARTERLY REPORT:

quarter September-December / 2003



PERINE activity at INDIRE has centred on:
  • Article on PERINE project to be included in the new INDIRE web-magazine;
  • Survey on the Internet in order to gather relevant web sites for the PERINE database;
  • Editing of new documentary records;
  • Input of new documentary records;
  • Preparation for the Hamburg meeting;
  • Focus on the four thematic areas (as to the retrieval of web sites, resources etc.)
National and European activity has focussed on the following main areas:
In the second four months – May to August 2003 - INDIRE has been active in the following European and national projects:

NEW! The site re-styling and restructuring has been the main activity of the Institute, due to a new communication and publishing policy. Preparation of articles, new web-pages, surveys and communication and dissemination activities has been massive.
NEW!A new sub-site is being designed, presenting interesting examples of innovative educational buildings, spaces, playgrounds, commented by an architect who is expert in the field. This is a way of stressing the importance of the physical setting to educational researchers and administrators.
An experimental project, funded by INDIRE, concerning 30 schools and dealing with remedial teaching was launched in January 2002. Teachers have been asked to produce and test their Learning Objects, made in the perspective of using them with the pupils needing remedial teaching. According to their learning styles, pupils are encouraged to use these LOs. At present, the project concerns the upper secondary (I level) and is about five different subjects taught at school.
Further activities were carried out in the following current projects:
National project established by the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) for the teacher in-service training on new technologies (http://puntoedu.indire.it) in the framework of the MIUR ICT project;
National project established by the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) for the primary teacher in-service training on ESL in primary schools. The project - addressed to 5-year old pupils and their teachers - takes place in the context of 250 primary schools experimenting early schooling;
CELEBRATE, a European project that seeks to create an innovative approach to teaching by using e-Learning technologies and learning objects (INDIRE role: partner).
@LIS, a new European project for fostering co-operation between Europe and Latin America in the field of educational technologies, innovative teaching methods and cultural heritage (INDIRE role: partner in sub-project no. 1 and co-ordinator of sub-project no. 2);
GLOBAL JUNIOR CHALLENGE 2002, an international contest aiming at promoting the use of new technologies and the exchange of successful initiatives among the young;
National Documentation School Network, a documentary network of schools aiming at disseminating educational information among schools, co-ordinated by INDIRE. The project will include the sub-projects GOLD and WINIRIDE Implementation of the ETB-ELR Thesaurus of three more language versions (Dutch, Albanian and Hebrew as to the print version, http://eun.org/eun.org2/eun/en/etb/content);
Dotsafe (www.eun.org/eun.org2/eun/index_dotsafe.cfm), examining issues to do with the safe use of the Internet;
EUN-CLE (European Schoolnet Collaborative Learning Environment) (www.saferinternet.org/filtering/euncle.asp) which aims to create a multi-lingual international learning environment for young people aged from 8 to 14, acceptable to different national educational approaches to Internet safety. A specific portal, called ZAP, will be create to allow children to retrieve useful learning resources;

INDIRE has regularly updated the following databases during the period: GOLD :documentary units relating to best practice in Italian schools at any level of education. The system is undergoing a process of revision. The new database will contained best practices selected by IRREs (Regional Institute for Educational Research) on the basis of common qualitative indicators.
BIBL : bibliographic references about Italian and foreign scientific literature in the field of education (+ 148 – Tot.:17,742 records).
Intersiti Risorse Internet per la Didattica: directory of Internet sites classified by curriculum subjects, indexed and abstracted. (642 revised and updated + 12 new records);
RIVI: bibliographic references about periodical literature in the field of education (+ 723 – Tot.: 34,880);
EMER, directory of current Italian educational periodicals, with an index and content notation. (Tot.: 380);
DIA: Immagini per la didattica: images covering a number of curriculum areas, with indexes and content description. (+ 2172 - Tot.: 6,480);
Portale per l’educazione interculturale, an educational portal on intercultural education, multilingual material and cultural-related initiatives;
Valutazione del software didattico: professionally certified educational software for any level of education. Assessed software: + 20 – Tot.: 172; selected: + 19 – Tot.: 142.
Two other information services were managed and updated during the period:
Scuola, handicap, tecnologie, dealing with educational technologies for disabled pupils.
SET: scienza e tecnologia , about pilot projects on scientific and technological education promoted by MIUR within the 2001-2002 school year.
WINIRIDE - the software for school library documentation and cataloguing, produced and maintained by INDIRE - was improved by adding the functionality of derived cataloguing from the Italian National Bibliography.
INDIRE continues to operate as the Italian National Agency with responsibilities towards the Eurydice network (NEW! New publications: 1. Summary Sheets on Education in Europe and Ongoing Reforms (2003) - Schede sintetiche sui sistemi educativi in Europa e sulle riforme in corso (Francia, Spagna, Regno Unito, Germania, Portogallo); 2. Dossier nazionale per EURYBASE: Il sistema educativo italiano (2002) - The Education System in Italy (2002); 3. National Actions to Implement Lifelong Learning in Europe (2001) - Iniziative nazionali a favore dell’apprendimento lungo tutto l’arco della vita in Europa (2001); 4. Nuova brochure di Eurydice (2003): EURYDICE The information Network on Education in Europe - EURYDICE La rete di informazione europea sull’istruzione; 5. Press Release: The teaching profession in Europe: Profile trends and concerns; Report III: Working Conditions and Pay General lower secondary education (2003) - Comunicato stampa: La professione docente in Europa: Profili, tendenze e sfide - Rapporto III: Condizioni di servizio e salari Istruzione secondaria inferiore generale; 6. Bollettino di informazione internazionale n.2/2002 - “Sistemi educativi dei paesi candidati” (Translation and re-elaboration of summary sheets on European educational systems of all candidate countries) and Socrates programme.
The Institute has also continued to conduct special work playing as a reference point for school libraries and documentation centres in Italy and as a documentation and support agency for the Istruzione Formazione Tecnica Superiore.
